Search Engines & Directories

Google This is the only search engine I use. The fact that a University of Maryland grad, Sergey Brin is one of its founders doesn't hurt matters either.

Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.org) I am one of the 64,000+ volunteer editors around the globe. We are working to have the best directory of websites in the world. Our slogan is "Humans Do It Better". The areas I edit include tax and finance and University of Maryland basketball and football.

Things to do & Places to see in the SF Bay Area (and how to get here, too)

San Francisco International: A great airport, but expect delays whenever it rains or there's fog.

Oakland International & San Jose International Good alternatives, especially if you hate the SFO delays. They often have flights that are less expensive, too.

San Francisco Giants The National League Champions play at Pacific Bell Park. Buy tickets here and get team info, stats and more.

Oakland A's The American League West champion A's play at Network Associates Coliseum. Buy tickets online.

San Francisco Zoo The zoo has just undergone a major renovation. Located at Great Highway and Sloat Blvd, the zoo is just seconds from the Pacific Ocean.

The Exploratorium :  The museum of science, art & human perception. A great place for kids and adults alike. Located in San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, near the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Tech, Museum of Innovation San Jose has long been known as "The Capital of Silicon Valley" and now has the attraction to prove it.

Steve's Personal Favorites

Troubleshooter Troubleshooter is the website of Consumer Advocate Tom Martino. Has a daily radio show on hundreds of stations nationwide. You can post complaints about any business here.

The Terrapin Times The most comprehensive source of news and information for the 2002 NCAA Champion Maryland Terrapin. I served as Maryland basketball student manager from 1978-1981 and live and die with the team.

CollegeRPI.com Jerry Palm is a statistical genius and mirrors the RPI used by the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Selection committee.

TruthAboutDuke.com A great site showing how the Duke Blue Devils are the nation's biggest college sports fraud. As a confirmed Dook hater, I love this site.

Making a Little Dookie Cry I despise the Dook Blue Devils and making this little Dook fan cry as we won the 2004 ACC Championship is priceless.

The Washington Post Still, the nation's most important newspaper, well, unless you ask the New York Times. My favorite sports columnist and friend, Mike Wilbon makes the Post's sports section worth reading.

The New York Times  The nation's most important newspaper, unless you ask the Washington Post. Of course, since the Times has quoted me three times and the Post hasn't ever quoted me, my bias toward the Times is noted (you must register to use the site, but registration is free).

Charitable Organizations that have earned our respect and dollars

Mazon: A Jewish response to hunger. Contributions to MAZON are granted to a broad spectrum of nonprofit organizations confronting hunger in the US and around the world.

Fistula Hospital: I saw a story on Oprah about this remarkable hospital and its incredible Australian- born doctor, Catherine Hamlin. I have never been so moved by any television report I have ever seen. A fistula often develops after a very-long and difficult labor for very young mothers-to-be in Africa. Inevitably, the baby is born dead and the mother has a horrible struggle due to the fistula. Because the condition is so embarrassing, it virtually always lead to banishment of the young woman. For more information, please click on the link to Fistula Hospital and please give generously.

Shelter Network: Provides vital services such as housing, food & counseling here in San Mateo County, CA. Despite the fact that this is a very wealthy county, we still have significant pockets of poor families. Over 80% of the families they serve are able to break the cycle of homelessness and return to homes of their own.
